SCImago divides journals into four quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) based on their SJR score within each subject category. This means a journal can be Q1 in one category and Q2 in another.
What Each Quartile Means
- Q1 (Top 25%): The highest-ranked journals in a field.
- Q2 (25-50%): High-quality journals with good reputation.
- Q3 (50-75%): Average-quality journals. Still peer-reviewed and legitimate.
- Q4 (Bottom 25%): Lower-ranked but still indexed journals.
Should You Always Target Q1?
Not necessarily. The right quartile depends on the quality of your research, your career stage, turnaround time needs, and field norms.
